Soul: Disney-Pixar and the meaning of life

At least once in their lifetime, everyone considers questions such as: "What's the meaning of life?" or "What will happen to me once I am dead?" or "What there is before life?". Soul, the last movie by Disney-Pixar, gives to the audience a visual answer to the last two questions. The CGA animation film is directed by Pete Docter and co-directed by Kemp Powers, we see a style which is quite unusual for a work by Pixar. The studios are quite known for the realism and the details with which they realise each model; yet in Soul, they went for a more simple and deformed style, even if the cinematography and the light effects are close to perfection.

Personally, I can't hide the difficulty of speaking about the plot of this movie or describing what it is about without making any spoilers. It is the story of Joe Gardner, a jazz musician who accidentally dies before performing at the concert of his life. It is also the story of "22", a soul who is in the before-life and doesn't want to live. The meeting between Joe and 22 is the main point of the plot, and how it will make their personas evolve, making both more mature. It reminds, as often happens in Pixar's works, of the structure of the "bildungsroman", a peculiar form of literature based on the personal growth of the main character. In this case, considering the main theme, the vision of this film will surely intrigue the parents, even if more hilarious and silly parts, for the children, are not missing. And they are not even missing very touching moments, which I won't report in order to avoid spoilers or even jaw-dropping shots, like how the afterlife tunnel is in the display, with this strong contrast of dark and light, interrupted just by the teal of the souls.

Alas, “Soul” doesn't give an answer about the meaning of life. but it is surely a movie which is worth to be watched over and over again, and it is worth the sub to Disney+.
